Many people were unemployed during the Great Depression because there werent very many jobs available. Men who had lost their jobs or investments often felt like failures because they couldnt find another job or provide for their families. Many men were embarrassed to be at home during working hours and were ashamed to ask friends for help.

Many families had to move in together and living conditions declined because they had to crowd into small houses or apartments. The divorce rate dropped because people couldnt afford seperate households. Many people gave up even small pleasures like an ice cream cone or a movie ticket.

was higher now then ever before. African Americans, Hispanics, and in the west, Asian Americans, all suffered as white laborers began to demand the low-paying jobs typically filled by these people. African Americans worked as janitors or baggage carriersbut soon lost these jobs to whites. Black unemployment sky-rocketed to about 56%. Relief programs discriminated against African Americans so black churches and organizations like the National Urban League gave private help.

Many children died of starvation because their parents couldn't afford to provide care for them. Children got sick more often then adults and adults often gave their food to their children then starved themselves.

Dorothea Lange was a famous photographer of the time. She took pictures of the Great Depression and shared them with the people. The pictures stirred public attention and helped win aid for the workers.

Hoovervilles were small shacks that made up a town where homeless people would live because they couldnt afford to own a home. Many of these shacks were made out of anything and everything, anything that people could find they used to make their shack. Most these homeless people were originally poor people before the stock market crashed. Poor people lost everything during the Great Depression.

Dust storms destroyed a lot of the land in the Midwest. Many people moved away from the Midwest to escape the dust storms. The people that did stay tried hard to cover the windows and doors so the dust wouldnt come in, but the dust came in every little crack it could find. Dust storms harmed peoples lungs if they inhaled it.
